Revival of Education in Kazo District Spurs Academic Excellence

The education sector in Kazo District has undergone a remarkable revival, thanks to the collective efforts of local leaders, parents, teachers, religious institutions and government of the National Resistance Movement. This renewed commitment has significantly boosted academic performance across the district making Kazo one of the top-performing districts in Uganda.

Kazo District was recently ranked 14th among the best-performing districts nationwide in the 2024 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), 639 pupils achieved First Grade, 2,413 obtained Second Grade and 214 secured Third Grade. Additionally, all Senior Four (S4) students passed and qualified to join A-Level and other tertiary institutions. Senior Six (S6) students also performed exceptionally well, with the top student in the district scoring 18 points.

A special vote of thanks goes to the entire education department and the former Acting District Education Officer, Mr. Robert Agume Rwabwizi, for their pivotal roles in this success.
The Chief Administrative Officer, Hajji Badru Mayanja has been instrumental in urging parents to work hand-in-hand with the government to support education. He emphasized that while the government has its responsibilities; parents also play a crucial role in their children’s education.

In February Hajji Mayanja while meeting with primary school teachers in Kazo Town Council, called for the revival of drama clubs aimed at sensitizing students about HIV/AIDS. “Many parents and teachers have ignored our enemy of HIV/AIDS. We need to sensitize our children to protect themselves as people have become too silent about this threat,” he said.
The LC5 Chairman, Rev. Samuel Mugisha Katugunda, also urged parents to ensure their children attend school. He issued a strong warning to government schools against sending students home due to school fees, stating that schools should deal with parents instead of punishing students.

The newly appointed District Education Officer (DEO), Mwiine Lamech Mirembe an experienced educationist and former Inspector of Schools in Kiruhura district has pledged to continue the great work started by his predecessor. He is determined to address remaining challenges in the education sector and propel Kazo to even greater heights.
Principal District Inspector of Schools, Mr. John Bosco Tumwesigye, highlighted key factors behind the district’s progress. “Since Kazo was carved out of Kiruhura District in 2019, we’ve seen accelerated academic performance. This success is due to intensified inspection, monitoring, effective support supervision and improved teacher attendance facilitated by TELA (Teacher Effectiveness and Learners Achievement) systems in all government-aided schools,” he said.

The Kazo District Education Department is now a fully fledged department led by DEO Mwiine Lamech Mirembe. The team includes:
Robert Agume Rwabwizi—Senior Education Officer
John Bosco Tumwesigye—Principal District Inspector of Schools
Robert Aitakatahire—Education Officer in charge of Guidance and Counseling
Mackline Namanya—Senior Inspector of Schools
Annet Nagasha—Inspector of Schools
Frank Abaho—Sports Officer
Wilson Twesigye Kananura—Inspector of Schools
Julias Mugabe—Education Officer special needs

The Ministry of Education and Sports has also played a significant role by including Kazo district in various national education projects. Religious institutions have further contributed by constructing some schools later supported by the government.

Great appreciation goes to His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his unwavering support towards education in Kazo District. Currently, mega projects like the construction of Burunga Seed School and Kyantumo Seed School are underway.
With this continued commitment from all stakeholders, Kazo District is well on its way to becoming one of the leading education hubs in the country.
